Google Opens Nest APIs and Buys Dropcam

When Google announced its purchase of Nest back in January, I wrote in a recent ABI Research blog post that the rational of the deal was largely about enabling potential APIs and third-party apps. With the news that Google is now opening up Nest to (approved) third parties, it would seem that this may indeed be the case. Importantly, the move follows a confirmation that Nest/Google has acquired Dropcam, a company that supplies cloud-centric Wi-Fi webcams, for a price of US$555 million. In the light of these two developments, and on the eve of the firm's I/O developer conference, let’s further analyze in this ABI Insight what Google is trying to achieve in this space.
