The notion of a hardened network perimeter in enterprises is one that is finally being laid to rest, despite having been largely irrelevant for the better part of a decade. While cloud and mobile have bored massive holes in the traditional "castle" analogy, the actual move to replace it with a more elastic perimeter has been painfully slow. Enterprises are finally recognizing the huge cracks in the walls and are finally moving towards next-generation defenses. The new approach increasingly involves swapping out hardware-based network boxes with software-based platforms and virtual appliances. Enterprises are looking additionally to delegate some of that work through managed services.
