Contactless’s State of Play in the United Kingdom


On April 29, 2014, the U.K. Cards Association released some figures related to contactless payment card penetration and usage within the United Kingdom. I wanted to run through the data points provided by the U.K. Cards Association and provide ABI Research’s thoughts on the progress of contactless in the United Kingdom.

Card Data Points Revealed


The figures published claimed that a record £109.2 million was spent using contactless cards in March 2014, an increase of £22.2 million from the previous month and 200% higher when compared to total contactless spend in the United Kingdom at the same time last year. The average spend per transaction is currently in the £6.46 region.
