AT&T Announces New Mobile Broadband In-flight Service


On April 28, AT&T announced a new project to bring in-flight mobile broadband to air travelers. The details are somewhat sketchy, but it is working with Honeywell to build a new 4G LTE-based ground network for the continental United States. AT&T plans to launch the service for airlines and passengers in commercial, business, and general aviation by late 2015. The service will use LTE technology for the air-to-ground link, and Wi-Fi in the cabin. Presumably, AT&T’s 4G vendors will supply the LTE ground equipment, and Honeywell will deliver aviation grade LTE and Wi-Fi in the plane.
