This small cell backhaul forecast model characterizes link penetration in five regions of the world: North America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and Middle East and Africa. Unique penetration values are estimated for each year to 2018 and beyond for the seven wired and wireless backhaul technologies. In this way we account for regional differences between each technology.

The penetration factor is further subdivided by access technology (2G, 3G, 4G) and by population density (urban, suburban, rural) for each of the five regions.

The link penetration factor is multiplied by the small cell unit forecast from Small Cells (MD-METR-158) to obtain a count of the number of links by region, access generation, and population density.

We apply a hardware cost per link estimate to each link type to obtain an estimate for the hardware market – link ASPs are modeled by year and region and are based on discussions with individual vendors.

The data for each of the regions is summed to provide a world forecast.

This dataset categorizes small cell backhaul according to transmission medium – wired or wireless. The wired categories include fiber (direct fiber, FTTx) and copper (DSL and Cable/HFC). The wireless categories include sub 6GHz unlicensed, sub 6GHz licensed, microwave, millimeter wave, and satellite.
