U.S. DoT Moves Ahead with Backup Camera Mandate; Tesla Motors to Replace Side Mirrors with Interior Displays?


The debate about replacing/complementing physical side-view and rear-view mirrors in vehicles with their digital equivalents is in full swing. And it is a debate that is taking place at different levels. The first level is not so much a debate but NHTSA announcing a mandate for backup cameras to come into force in the United States by 2018. Much delayed, the rear-view camera mandate is expected to save the lives of half of the 200 pedestrians killed every year (mostly children under age 5 who pass unnoticed through the rear-view mirror’s field of view) and prevent 14,000 from being injured.  

At the same time Tesla Motors is seeking approval to replace side-view mirrors with a combination of cameras and interior displays. This makes a lot of sense for electrical vehicles because it would both reduce the weight and improve aerodynamics, contributing to longer ...
