Amazon Unveiled Its Fire TV


Amazon finally unveiled its long-rumored set-top box, which is dubbed “Fire TV.” Generally, this adheres to the principles of the smart set-top box category (not the “casting” device, such as Google Chromecast, which requires the use of a smartphone or tablet to have that type of function). The specific smart set-top box features that Fire TV adheres to are:

  • It has several video and some audio-centric content partners
  • It focuses the transactional (pay per view and purchased) video content on the provider’s own ecosystem, while allowing for third-party subscription services (Netflix), “online” video services (YouTube, Vevo), and TV Everywhere applications (WatchESPN, Showtime Anytime)
