Facebook Buys Oculus VR for US$2 Billion to US$2.3 Billion


Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus VR will amount to US$400 million in cash, 23.1 million Facebook shares, and an additional US$300 million if certain milestones are met. The ascension from Kickstarter darling and trade show favorite to Facebook’s most recent US$1 billion plus acquisition is quite astounding. There’s a great deal of noise around crowdfunding as well, e.g., some of those early backers are upset with the sale (most don’t trust Facebook with Oculus, worrying the company will alter it from its previous path), while others make light of the “rich getting richer.” While we may find humor in a shirt that reads “I Backed Oculus Rift on Kickstarter and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt,” it begs the question: what does this deal mean for the future of crowdfunding?
