Stephen Elop Taking the Reins of Devices and Studios at Microsoft


In the short time since the Xbox One was first formally announced last year, Microsoft’s gaming division will have its third head in as much time. While this fact alone is not terribly noteworthy, it does raise some questions about the future of Xbox and, perhaps, even Microsoft’s greater entertainment aspirations. When Don Mattrick left Microsoft for Zynga, the Xbox One was still recovering from several missteps around platform policies, but between that time and launch, the company and its new Xbox lead, Julie Larson-Green, did commendable work, returning goodwill back to the Xbox brand. As Microsoft undertook the steps to appoint a future CEO, however, it was reported by the media that potential candidate, Stephen Elop, would consider spinning off the Xbox business, which surprised many, considering the proximity of the Xbox One launch. Elop lost out on the CEO position to insider (and Cloud thinking) ...
