DoJ Assistant Attorney General Sends a Message


In an interview with The New York Times published on January 30, “Wireless Mergers Will Draw Scrutiny, Antitrust Chief Says,” Assistant Attorney General for the Anti-Trust Division William J. Baer signals would be suitors of the DoJ position on any mergers involving the top four mobile telecom operators in the United States. Public signaling such as this is common among companies seeking a consensus, such as the airlines that are seeking a price increase. Here, the DoJ finds it appropriate to publically signal in the absence of any concrete proposal.
