Fon Closes US$14 Million Round of Financing
Spanish “crowd-sourced” Wi-Fi aggregator Fon announced the completion of its fourth round of funding. Investors were led by Qualcomm Ventures and other investors included Index Ventures, Google, Coral, Atomico, and Deutsche Telekom (DT). Since its inception in 2006, Fon has raised almost US$72 million and the company now offers its customers access to over 12 million Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide.
Fon has said that it will be working with Qualcomm Atheros on a new version of its router, which will feature Fon’s Wi-Fi sharing capabilities and will be based on a chipset from Qualcomm Atheros. The new router will become available during the first half of this year, according to the companies. Qualcomm also plans to offer the Fon protocol stack as part of an SDK, so that router vendors can easily integrate Fon network...
