Beware the Stock Manipulators

Samsung Electronics has taken some stiff criticism of late regarding its financial results. Some of this can be attributed to greater-than-ever competition and margin pressure in the smartphone market, as BlackBerry and HTC can attest. Nevertheless, questions also need to be raised regarding financial investment institutions chipping in their ten cents’ worth to influence Samsung’s stock price. The trading departments in these institutions want volatility so they can make bets on the likely (or unlikely) moves of the stock price, and their equity analysts are quick to make speculative comments before the announcements, adding to the volatility. Ultimately, Samsung needs to consider and focus its development of smartphones and wearable devices carefully.
