SoftBank Is Making Moves Again

In mid-December 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported that Sprint is working on acquiring T-Mobile US. Just before Christmas, Bloomberg reported that Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank, which has more than an 80% stake in Sprint, has spoken to at least five banks to raise funds for the potential bid.

T-Mobile US is open to the deal as well. Previously, its CFO regarded the consolidation as the “logical ultimate combination.” In fact, in July 2013, the ABI Insight, “Pay Your Money, Take Your Chances: Telecom Consolidation,” also suggested that a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile US would make sense.
