What Is a Hackathon Anyway?

Hackathons are conferences or casual get-togethers (meet-ups, if you’re in with the groove) in which code developers get together to accomplish seemingly multi-month products in a day or week. The focus is on innovation, collaboration, and prototyping.

Hackathons can be sponsored internally within your company at an incubator, university, or with your customers. They can be a good way to cheaply tap into innovative ideas, discover talent, or test out a new product. Sometimes, hackathons are held with broader audiences (not just programmers), which can be useful, especially in more open-ended projects looking for good ideas rather than solving implementations to specific problems.
