Government-driven Drive Me Project to Start in 2014


Volvo and Sweden are getting serious about autonomous driving as they look to achieve their shared goal of reaching zero traffic fatalities. The Drive Me self-driving vehicle trial project is set up as a partnership between the Volvo Car Group, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, Lindholmen Science Park, and the City of Gothenburg, combining resources from the industry, governments, and the academic research world. The program will kick off in 2014, with the first phase dedicated to an overall assessment, consumer research, and the design of test vehicles, including the user interface and cloud functionality.

The actual large-scale trial, planned for 2017 and involving 100 self-driving Volvo cars, will take place on 50 km of selected roads in and around Gothenburg. The vehicles will be based on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which will be implemented first in the 2014 Vol...
