iPad Statistics and New Models Featured at October Launch Event
During an October 2013 launch event, Apple executives announced that more than 170 million iPads had sold cumulatively since 2Q 2010. As a direct comparison, Apple shipped more than 155 million tablets from 2010 through 2Q 2013, while the rest of the branded market shipped 115 million units during the same time period.
Other statistics thrown out by Apple included the availability of 475,000 iPad apps and third-party data, suggesting that more than 80% of tablet web traffic comes from iPads. While the web stats sound impressive, little detail is provided on how the conclusion was reached, leaving ABI Research a bit skeptical as to the significance of the figure. For example, if bytes of data are being counted, does this suggest that the Safari browser on the iPad is actually less efficient than on other platforms?
