Apple, PayPal, Beacons, and BLE All Being Hyped as “NFC Killers”


Perhaps because it has been overhyped by some (or because it has become a feature of the love/hate Apple/Android fanboy arguments), but some people seem ever so ready to jump on NFC’s “grave.” Following confirmation that the iPhone 5S and 5C were not to feature NFC, I was asked by several (U.S.) journalists if this signaled the final nail in NFC’s coffin. This was very quickly followed with inquiries about Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) replacing NFC as the in-store payment technology, as news (or rumors and supposition in some instances) broke of Apple’s iBeacon and PayPal’s Beacon products.
