Defining Heterogeneous Processing


Heterogeneous processing or heterogeneous computing is the use of a variety of processor cores for various tasks to optimize performance and power consumption. It involves the flexible use of application processor cores, GPU cores, DSPs, and accelerators for either a performance boost or very low-power processing. Any processor cores used can be general purpose or application-specific, and they can be integrated either in an SoC or on separate chips. It is going to become critical for mobile device semiconductor vendors to offer heterogeneous processing capabilities and the tools to make them easier for developers to leverage.
