First-hand Impressions of NVIDIA SHIELD


Having spent some time with a demo unit, I can confidently say NVIDIA knows how to put together a quality hardware product and the packaging/box also lives up to the high-end standards. The SHIELD has some weight, which adds to the substantive feel, but more importantly, the controller and materials are high quality, largely matching the controllers from console manufacturers. The screen, while on the smaller side (the large bezel does not help) is sharp and vibrant, but due to the orientation, it is not a substitute for tablets. In fact, the landscape orientation of the screen is one of the device’s weaknesses (more on this later). Android 4.2.2 runs smoothly on the Tegra 4 hardware and mobile gaming (when it works) is certainly a better experience than a stock smartphone or tablet. From a hardware perspective, NVIDIA’s SHIELD is a solid value at $300, but the handheld’s perceived value depends greatly on one’s perspective...
