M2M connectivity is bringing network communications to a world of devices that formerly were standalone and unmanageable remotely. In some applications connectivity has long been established but through wired communications, impacting the cost of deployment and restricting the mobility of any connection. Wireless communications brought a new level of connectivity and mobility to M2M devices. Over the next five years M2M connectivity will see significant growth but a range of connectivity options will compete across a wide range of application areas. This report examines the competition and the different drivers and values of four key M2M connectivity options: wireline, cellular, wireless sensor networking (WSN), and satellite.
