Online video remains a driving force behind many connected devices. Game consoles took an early lead in the connected living room as gamers looked to upgrade their hardware and over time these platforms (seventh generation) quickly became media aggregators. Not long after connected TVs picked up momentum as a wider range of models included internet connectivity, but services and application developers have started to place more emphasis on other platforms like smart STBs, which carry significantly lower prices and shorter upgrade cycles.
Mobile devices are a key contributing factor in this shift in focus as these devices increasingly set consumer expectations. Tablets in particular, are commanding more viewing time from consumers, mainly at key times in the day. While cellular networks will play an increasingly important role in online video Wi-Fi will remain the primary connectivity channel for mobile devices.
In this report we discuss the roles connected CE (e.g. game consoles, connected TVs, smart STBs) and mobile devices (over mobile networks and Wi-Fi offload) will have on the online video market. Forecasts (out to 2019) include penetration rates of key CE devices as well as the distribution of online video views by consumers across these devices and mobile.
