Small Cell Backhaul

This report examines small cell backhaul technology choices for the “first mile” between the small cell and a local aggregation point and discusses the drivers and inhibitors for each technology. There are multiple techniques available to a service provider each with its advantages and disadvantages and we outline these here.

For wired backhaul we examine the differences between Fiber, DSL FTTx and Cable/HFC systems and for wireless we distinguish between sub 6GHz licensed and unlicensed, Microwave, 60GHz V-Band, 70/80GHz E-Band, TV White Space (TVWS), and Satellite.
