MEMS were first developed in semiconductor labs in the 1960s. Traditionally, MEMS sensors have been predominantly used in the automotive, industrial, and medical sectors. Accelerometers are being used in airbag restraint systems, electronic stability program (ESO), and anti-lock braking systems (ABS). Other usages include pressure sensors to monitor fuel consumption, vibration and condition monitoring systems, blood pressure monitors, pacemakers, ventilators, respirators, and many others. The recent availability of inexpensive, ultra compact, low power consumption and multiple axis MEMS sensors have made these devices accessible and useful for a number of consumer electronic devices. Many people in the industry have labelled this new phenomenon as the “MEMS Consumerization Wave.” Furthermore, MEMS sensors are enabling companies to offer an extra level of functionality to mobile services and applications.
ABI research provides an overview of the MEMS sensor market with key trends and regional forecasts for smartphones, media tablet and portable game player shipments, revenues, and ASPs. Furthermore, the research study also provides key market data points for each MEMS sensor type. The final section of the report provides an overview of the key MEMS sensor manufacturers.
