Contactless ticketing was one of the first markets to utilize contactless technology on a mass scale. To date, the ticketing market has largely been dominated by proprietary solutions such as MIFARE, Calypso, and FeliCa, leaving the market fragmented with no specified international standard or specifications. Deployments remain largely completed on a local city level, rather than country specific, leaving further fragmentation and a lack of consistency. Recent market developments have led to increased attention to new ticketing solutions, paving the way for the possible beginnings of an international standard in the form of EMV, NFC, and new specifications set out by the OSPT for an open standards solution. This study primarily focuses on providing an overall summary for standalone RFID and smart card ticketing shipments. Shipment data is broken down by technology type and presented at both a worldwide and regional level for a forecast period spanning from 2011 to 2017. Data also include forecast data on the usage of contactless payment cards and NFC ticketing applications on mobile devices.
