The vision of energy harvesting is that it will be a way of perpetually powering small devices and providing a cleaner environment through "free" energy that won’t require the use of polluting batteries. Although the collection of energy through harvesting is miniscule, it is enough to power wireless sensor networks (WSN), the next step in the evolution in automating buildings, utilities, factories, homes, and transportation systems. Energy harvesting devices are particularly attractive as replacements for batteries in low-power electronic systems such as WSNs, because of the logistics involved in the time-consuming tasks of procuring, installing, and changing the batteries.
