User Plane Location, SUPL-Compliant Handsets, and the Future of Mobile Device Positioning
SUPL (Secure User Plane Location) is a specification developed by OMA (Open Mobile Alliance) that supports interoperability, security, and authentication. The specification is designed to support location determination regardless of the location server used by the wireless network operator handling the request as the handset roams. SUPL is a client-side implementation in which many of the tasks handled by the network reside and take place on the handset. By moving these functions to the handset and reducing the level of location request-driven interaction between the handset and the network, many of the provider/provisioner variabilities and complexities are removed and the interoperability of the handset with varying network server architectures is enabled.
