The True Relevance of Connected Navigation

by Dominique Bonte

A debate about connected navigation currently dominates the navigation ecosystem. For this debate, connectivity means built-in cellular, real-time two-way connectivity based on an integrated SIM-card. Interestingly, connected navigation as a principle is being applied to all navigation hardware form factors: from the emerging connected PNDs over smartphones to connected OEM navigation, and even consumer telematics systems such as GM’s OnStar and BMW’s Connected Drive. While much of the discussion is focused on the more technical aspects of connected navigation platforms, systems, and hardware, what is lacking is an in-depth assessment of which connected navigation applications will be successful, and – more importantly – which ones will the end user be willing to pay for.
