5G Economics: Where is the Industry Heading?

Recent market developments denote a trend of vendors focusing on value-based business models that are intrinsically characterized by different economic principles and utility on offer. The examples that attest to this development are numerous; 3GPP has proposed a service-based architecture for next-generation 5G core; Ericsson recently announced that, going forward, they are focusing on “value-based business models” as illustrated by the recent launch of their AI-based Operations Engine; and Nokia is embracing cognitive capabilities to pursue growth in 5G, customer experience, and data monetization. Apple, meanwhile, is doubling down on the services narrative, an opportunity poised to be the growth machine in the coming years.

Private LTE Will be a US$16.3 Billion Opportunity by 2025 and the Foundation for 5G Services in End-Vertical Markets

By 2025, the private Long-Term Evolution (LTE) market comprising of healthcare, transport and logistics, manufacturing, smart venues, smart cities, and oil and gas will be worth US$16.3 billion, according to ABI Research. With the future of Mobile Service Providers (MSPs) and network vendors to be defined beyond the consumer market to end-vertical enterprises, private LTE is set to be a key asset to create new revenue streams.

“A new understanding of spectrum usage, spearheaded by the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) activities in the United States, and increasing demand from industry verticals are the main drivers of private LTE,” said Pablo Tomasi, Senior Analyst. “The United States is taking the lead in bypassing the issue of spectrum, which has been traditionally one of the roadblocks to private LTE expansion. The CBRS three-tier system provides 150 MHz of spectrum and most importantly, offers the ability for companies to acquire spectrum depending on their needs. Besides CBRS, other developments such as MulteFire and that countries are considering auctioning regional spectrum, show that this new spectrum paradigm has a global scale,” continued Tomasi. Qualcomm Launches Robotics RB3 Platform for Robot, Drone Developers

Robotic Business Review

Lian Jye Su, principal analyst at ABI Research, said the announcement of the RB3 comes at the right time for commercial robots that need to be autonomous, agile, intelligent, and self-aware of their environments.

“For applications such as last-mile delivery, retail assistance, construction, tower inspection, construction and mining, robots need to support new capabilities beyond just function automation and control,” Jye Su said. “Thanks to its support for a wide range of sensors and the ability to use these sensors to dynamically manage, control, and schedule the robots’ functions, platforms such as Qualcomm Robotics RB3 Platform provides the robot with the required intelligence and enable them to make informed decisions during their operation in line with the task expected from them.” Read the full article
