Moving Multimodal AI to the Edge

Modality refers to the way in which something happens or is experienced. In AI training and inference, this can be thought of as single type of data input. An example of modality could include sound, vision, language, or any kind of sensor data. Multimodal then refers to the incorporation or interaction of multiple modalities of data into a single system or application. From the 1980s until the 2010s, multimodal systems were defined by rules-based or heuristic techniques. Since 2010, and developments in the field of deep learning, deep neural networks have begun to be incorporated into multimodal systems, making them more robust, accurate, and capable of generating unique insights into situations where many parameters are simultaneously at play. An example of a multimodal AI system would be a voice assistant, which has to combine audio data with a catalogue of natural language data and then a make decision on how to best respond.

Mission Critical Applications to Drive the Adoption of 5G sUAVs

Public safety agencies in big markets have started to deploy mobile broadband communication networks to replace their existing narrowband technology, such as FirstNet in the United States and the Emergency Services Network in the United Kingdom. The adoption of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) will lead to 5G New Radio (NR) and unlock a myriad of civil use cases for small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (sUAVs), according to a report by ABI Research.

“The biggest strengths of 5G are high throughput and low latency,” said Lian Jye Su, Principal Analyst. “The high throughput enables the seamless transmission of high-resolution images and videos that are critical for search and rescue missions. Low latency, on the other hand, allows sUAVs to be controlled by a centralized command and control in beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flight. Path and route information, sensor information, geospatial, and telemetry data can be exchanged with the command and control almost instantaneously.” Read more

Fourfold Growth in IoT Service Revenues to be Spearheaded by Data and Analytics

A recent report from ABI Research comprehensively defines the growth dynamics in IoT service revenues. Internet of Things (IoT) connections are supported by services and software platforms that reside in distinct segments of the IoT solution value chain: data and analytics management, device and applications management, network management (including connectivity and subscription management), and security platforms. Revenue generated from the sale of services and platform licensing is augmented by professional services and IoT data plans, to constitute total IoT service revenues. This is money that is paid by enterprises and municipalities to the software vendors and service providers that enable IoT connectivity. It is the supply-side of the IoT service opportunity.

Jamie Moss, Research Director for M2M, IoT, and IoE at ABI Research, describes the lay of the land, “The earliest software services developed specifically for M2M were connectivity management platforms, which we consider as part of network services. It is a market segment well-known to have been led by Cisco Jasper and Ericsson. But its value was always eclipsed by the professional services (custom solutions development and systems integration) aspect of IoT service rollout. Yet, as new software services and end-to-end solutions have grown in importance, professional services’ market share has been falling. The first such up-and-comer services segment challenging professional services was application development and management platforms, a popular commercially-available example being PTC Thingworx.” Read more

Top Industrial Technologies to Watch Out for at Hannover Messe 2019

Date: March 13, 2019, 10:30 a.m. U.S. EDT

Hannover Messe 2019 is happening at a time of extreme change in the industrial landscape. The pressures of an uncertain economic background alongside increasing global competition, customization, smaller batch runs, shrinking labor pool and energy resources mean that manufacturers are increasingly looking to technology to ensure they are able to remain competitive in the future.

This webinar from ABI Research will explore these issues and help attendees understand what are the most compelling technological developments that are expected to be seen at Hannover Messe and how they should maximize their potential.

Our webinar will also cover these questions:

  • What technologies will be hot at Hannover Messe and why?
  • What companies should you visit or explore at the show?
  • What companies and technologies should you view with caution?
  • Is Hannover Messe 2019 going to prove the market is changing?

Despite The Upcoming Data Demand Boom In India, 5G Will Appear Just After 2021 by ABI Research's Emanuel Kolta

Telecom Era

Early 5G deployers in the US, South Korea, Japan, China, and the UK expect that accelerated 5G deployments will stimulate economic growth, establish geopolitical superiority, and even gain advantages in terms of military and intelligence powers. The Indian government is also convinced about the advantages of 5G connectivity, including how it can help the country leapfrog traditional developmental barriers and advance the vision of “Digital India." The Indian Department of Telecommunication (DoT) expects that the cumulative economic impact of 5G on India can reach US$1 trillion by 2035. Read the full article

With fitness trackers in the workplace, bosses can monitor your every step — and possibly more

Washington Post

On his 21st day back at work after a heart attack and triple bypass surgery, Chris Zubko received a call from the main office. Through an app on his phone, his boss was literally monitoring every step of Zubko’s recovery.

“Man! I noticed your steps have picked up,’’ gushed Wayne Gono, 65, whose family operates Regal Plastics, a small fabrication business with satellite shops around Texas. “You used to be under 2,000, now you’re over 6,000. Two times you worked out this week. Good!’’
