What Lessons Must 5G Learn to Conquer End Vertical Markets?

The cyclical nature of the telco market, with generations of technologies enabling new opportunities, means that Mobile Service Providers (MSPs) have the opportunity every few years to leverage their position in the value chain to target the newly created value. To achieve this, right now, the industry wants to find a killer app for 5G, or an easy way to win; however, this does not reflect the complexity of the emerging market.

The focus should not be on finding a killer app, but the industry should discuss how 5G can enable the MSP to offer adjacent services and products. In which end vertical markets will 5G make a difference? Which industries want to be disrupted and which ones do not embrace disruption? These questions create a complex and fragmented market formed by multiple verticals unknown to MSPs. While MSPs do not talk about it, if history repeats itself, as it often does, MSPs will eventually deliver 5G competing on pricing. Therefore, they need to think now about new areas, new services, and new business models enabled by 5G. 5G is at a crucial stage, as it needs to move from promise to reality.

Construction and Mining Represent the Next Frontier of Robotics Adoption Thanks to Automation Technology Advances

In the past, for heavy industry-related locations like mines, robots must either be controlled by teleoperation or navigate autonomously across uneven terrain or within subterranean interiors with little to no human interaction. This was the same for construction sites, where robots must understand changing floor plans, keep track of inventory, and navigate stairs. Thanks to advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), wireless telecommunications, location-based technologies, and navigation systems, this is being realized. ABI Research believes that Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are making their way into mines and construction sites.

“Construction robots may be involved in specific tasks, such as brick-laying, painting, loading, and bulldozing, we expect hundreds of AMRs in the next 2 years, mainly doing haulage,” said Rian Whitton, research analyst. “These robots help to protect workers from a hazardous working environment, reduce workplace injuries, and address labor shortages.” Read more

Real Fake News Uncovered: Xiaomi’s Mi 8 Explorer Transparent-Back Smartphone Reveals Plastic Non-Functional Component Impostors Alongside Real Components

Beijing-based Xiaomi touts its Mi 8 Pro Explorer smartphone as “a phone unlike the rest, beneath the transparent glass back, the phone’s intricacies are on full display as technology and artistic beauty merge.” However, what is seen through the transparent back is a fake PC board ? with no real working parts because almost all are made from plastic, announced the Teardowns service of ABI Research.          

“The PC board that is visible through the transparent part of the back of the Mi 8 Pro Explorer is fake. While most people now know that it is not a real PC board, many still assume the transistors and chips they can see are real. “Most are not,” said Kyle Warren, Teardown Analyst. “The visible components are mostly plastic mockups (the nine larger components including the Qualcomm Snapdragon) and non-functional component imposters. There are 101 capacitors, 32 resistors, 11 hall effect switches, 6 Skyworks digital capacitors, and 7 LNAs that are legitimate, but they are all non-functional in the phone,” Warren confirmed. Generative Engineering in Smart Manufacturing (by ABI Research's Pierce Owen)


Industrial companies have used geometric topology optimization for several years now and are using it more because they have increased the use cases for Additive Manufacturing (AM). Topology optimization involves changing the geometric shape of a product given a set of constraints to improve its performance. Generative design takes this up a step by creating, or generating, the geometric shapes from nothing rather than changing the existing shapes. Generative engineering takes this to another level.
