The SMART IoT Act and the Continued Absence of U.S. Public Sector Guidance

On November 28, 2018, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed the State of Modern Application, Research, and Trends of IoT Act (the SMART IoT Act). The U.S. Senate still needs to vote to approve the bill before it can be signed into law, but the bill provides considerable insight into the overall goals of the U.S. Congress when it comes to shaping federal public policy regarding the Internet of Things (IoT). The bill requires the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to conduct a study on the state of the “internet-connected devices industry” in order to provide recommendations “for growth of the United States economy through the secure advancement of internet-connected devices.”

Global Smart Meter Revenue to Reach US$14 Billion by 2026

Water and gas meter shipments will see double-digit revenue growth over the next 5 years. This is welcome news in a market where smart electricity shipments are contracting and greatly slowing growth of overall revenues across the entire metering segment. Energy and water utility meter installations will result in annual shipments of 151 million smart meters in 2018 and will grow at CAGR of 3.2% to reach 193 million units by 2026, according to ABI Research. Energy utilities drove market demand for smart meters in 2018, however, future demand will be driven by water utilities.

“As smart electricity meter roll-outs near completion in China, there is an increasing focus on utility smart gas and water meter roll-outs. LPWA network technologies will be popular choices for these metering segments with LoRaWAN technology from ZTE CLAA in China and TATA communications in India competing with telcos’ NB-IoT networks in the region,” said Adarsh Krishnan, Principal Analyst. VR's Consumer Market Success Spurs Growth in Enterprise VR PoC Projects

The consumer Virtual Reality (VR) market continues to dominate in terms of both shipments and value chain revenue, and by 2023 the consumer VR hardware market will reach US$5 billion in revenues, according to a recent report by ABI Research. VR will lead on mobile reliant devices in terms of shipments over the next five years, while standalone shipments will see the fastest growth as new devices like the Oculus Quest hit the market. VR’s consumer market success is spurring enterprise VR adoption, which is growing as use cases and associated ROI potential are becoming better understood. Gaming and media & entertainment remain the most prominent applications in VR, but more enterprise-centric use cases in hospitality, retail, and education are beginning to embrace VR.

“VR companies have the chance to expand their footprint as they mature, while enterprise customers looking into novel visualization technologies have more choice in potential partners and use cases,” says Eleftheria Kouri, Research Analyst. “ROI is becoming better understood for businesses that are reluctant to adopt VR, with proof of concept implementations cementing value for uses like employee training and situational simulation, and these proof of concepts are increasing in quantity and scope.” Read more

AT&T to Switch on 5G in 12 Cities

ECT News

This is a true 5G, standards-compliant offering, noted Emanuel Kolta, a research analyst in the London office of ABI Research, a technology advisory company.

"This will ease the transition to 5G handsets as the units become available," Kolta told the E-Commerce Times.

Those handsets, some with foldable screens, are expected to start appearing in the market next year. "A foldable screen would bring a much bigger tablet-sized display, potentially in a clamshell form, and these new 5G-capable devices will improve the customer experience and boost data traffic," Kolta said.
