Recent 5G Smartphone Teardowns Show that RF Front End Content and Complexity in 5G Devices Has Created Quite a 5G Conundrum for Smartphone OEMs

ABI Research, using the teardown expertise of System Plus Consulting, unpacked nine leading second-generation 5G smartphones to discover that  RF Front End (RFFE) content is evidently moving to full level integrated modem-RF system designs, which will be the key to success as the market advances to wider 5G adoption.

The 5G smartphone market is set to rapidly expand in the next 12 months, with many mobile vendors looking to quickly develop their 5G portfolios. However, a host of extremely complex challenges lie ahead for smartphone vendors, which they must overcome to fully realize the 5G demand explosion across all tiers,” states David McQueen, Research Director.

RF Power Semiconductors Nearly at US$2 Billion for 2019 with 5G the Main Driver

Spending on RF power semiconductors (for <4GHz and >3W) continued to grow in 2019, nearing the US$2 billion mark, finds ABI Research. The wireless infrastructure segment has turned around in a big way and all other segments are up as well. Gallium Nitride (GaN) – long seen as the likely promising new “material of choice” for RF power semiconductors – is continuing its march to capture share.

Gallium Nitride has gained market share in 2019 and is forecasted to be a significant force over the next few years,” noted Lance Wilson, Research Director. “It bridges the gap between two older technologies, exhibiting the high-frequency performance of Gallium Arsenide combined with the power handling capabilities of Silicon LDMOS. GaN is now a mainstream technology that has achieved more than a quarter of the market and, in the future, is poised to capture more."

ABI Research: IoT data management services to reach US$43bn

Business Chief

With the internet of things (IoT) data enabling services continuously expanding, ABI Research explains that the market is approaching the stage of data democratization, with real time analytics technology being highlighly sought after.

"Edge vendors are expanding their Streaming as a Service (SaaS) offering toward hardware-agnostic systems. The embedded event streaming and ingestion capabilities packaged as purpose-built, off-the-shelf SaaS have a pre-built application logic and an industry-specific "way" to handle data," commented Kateryna Dubrova, Research Analyst at ABI Research. "Effectively, everyone is attempting to move from a service market to productized out-of-the-box SaaS in relation to streaming technologies."

Analyst Q&A: Consumer services - Entering a brave new world

Mobile World Live (featuring ABI Research Analyst Eleftheria Kouri)

Given the new reality and norms due to the Covid-19 pandemic, telecom operators could play an important role in meeting the demand for remote entertainment, education and work. For example, by leveraging AR/ VR solutions and 5G speeds in the near future, mobile operators can play an important role in broadcasting live sport events, music concerts, fashion shows, allowing users to gain a panoramic view of events or actively participate. Moreover, another promising use case for telecom operators is the introduction of 3D human holograms in video conference calls.
