Connected Services for Consumer and Commercial EVs to Reach US$378 Million in Revenues by 2030

Subscriptions of connected services for consumer and commercial Electric Vehicles (EVs), such as charging-station locator, eco-routing, and EV telematics, will grow 270% from 2020 to 2024, reaching 7 million subscribers by 2024. According to ABI Research, the combined revenue opportunity of connected services for consumer and commercial EVs will reach US$378 million by 2030.

EV sales have presented slow market growth in the past years. However, the increasing number of countries setting up deadlines to end the sale of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles will propel higher EV adoption. While Norway voiced its intention to end the sales of new ICE vehicles by 2025, Germany, Sweden, India, China, among other countries, seek to ban the sales of ICE vehicles from 2030. Moreover, with an increasing number of cities in Europe enforcing emission rules, only EVs will be able to run in urban areas in the next years,” explains Maite Bezerra, Smart Mobility and Automotive Analyst.

COVID-19 Causes Wearable Shipments to Plummet by 27 Million Compared to Pre-Pandemic 2020 Forecast

Wearables have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic because consumer interest in buying non-essential devices has dropped in the first quarter of 2020, along with the issues associated with a hampered supply chain. Wearable shipments in 2020 are now expected to be 254 million, down from the previously forecasted 281 million, states ABI Research, a global tech market advisory firm. Although a significant drop, this new COVID-19 impacted forecast is a minor increase from the 241 million shipments in 2019.  However, this now puts the estimated YoY increase at 5%, compared to 23% between 2018 and 2019 and the previously expected 17%.

While wearables will see fewer shipments this year than originally expected, shipments of devices that can track and monitor healthcare vitals has lowered the impact,” says Stephanie Tomsett, research analyst. “Healthcare wearables are already being utilized to help track the progression of COVID-19 and monitor patients remotely.”

Pandemic to Jumpstart Spending on Data Tools at Manufacturers

Wall Street Journal (subscription required)

Manufacturers will be spending far more on data management and analytics tools in the aftermath of the coronavirus outbreak, and will be using those tools for deeper insight into operations, sales and supply chain disruptions, chief information officers and observers say.

Factories will also be able to identify and extract relevant data sets to feed into artificial intelligence software designed to predict production and supply chain problems, said Michael Larner, a principal analyst at ABI.

“It’s a case of going from reactive analytics, reporting on what happened, to proactively analyzing what might happen and the suggested actions to take,” Mr. Larner said.

Where 5G and Industry 4.0 Meet Amid COVID-19

Automation World

The Nokia/ABI Research project surveyed more than 600 manufacturing decision-makers in late 2019 to assess investment strategies related to 4G/LTE, 5G, and Industry 4.0. Eighty-eight percent of respondents to the survey stated that they were familiar with private wireless (4G/5G) networking, with 84% considering deployment of a 4G/5G local private wireless network in their manufacturing operations.

More specifically, the survey revealed that 74% of respondents are looking to upgrade their communications and control networks by the end of 2022, with more than 90% investigating the use of either 4G and/or 5G in their operations. This intent is underscored by survey results showing that more than half of the respondents (52%) believe that the latest generation of 4G/LTE and 5G will be necessary to meet their transformational goals.
