Webinar: New Operating Models for Network Slicing

Presented by Oracle and ABI Research

Date: Thursday, May 30, 2019
Time: 11:00 AM EDT/8:00 AM PDT

Operators cannot keep doing the same things and expect different results. When it comes to network slicing, cloud technologies enable new business models that go beyond what most operators have done to date.

Join Todd Spraggins, Office of the CTO, Oracle Communications and Dimitris Mavrakis, Research Director, ABI Research as they discuss alternative operating models for network slicing and potential for new revenue sources with more agility, less cost and controlled risk.

2019 Brooklyn 5G Summit Looks at What's Next

The sixth annual Brooklyn 5G Summit (B5GS), organized by both Nokia and the New York University (NYU) Wireless research center at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, has evolved into one of the most preeminent conferences on 5G since its inception six years ago. This year’s Brooklyn 5G Summit saw about 300 physical attendees and a further 1,600 people viewing a live stream of the event thanks to IEEE.tv. The Rise of ROS: Nearly 55% of Total Commercial Robots Shipped in 2024 Will Have at Least One Robot Operating System Package Installed

The Robot Operating System (ROS) is a flexible and collaborative open-source framework for building operating systems for robotics. As its adoption continues to grow, ROS is aiming to become the industry standard for robotics middleware. According to ABI Research, nearly 55% of total commercial robots shipped in 2024, over 915,000 units, will have at least one ROS package installed, creating a large installed base of ROS-enabled robots.

“The success of ROS is due to its wide range of interoperability and compatibility with other open-source projects. ROS 1.0 leverages Orocos for real-time communication and OpenCV for machine vision models,” said Lian Jye Su, Principal Analyst. Sensing the needs of the robotics industry, Open Robotics launched ROS 2.0, the successor to ROS 1.0, and incorporated supports for multi-robot systems, real-time communications, non-ideal networks, and computing capabilities. This makes ROS 2.0 not only more user-friendly, robust, and real-time, but also makes it readier to be accepted as an industry standard. Read more

Warning: Undetected Unauthorized Activity in Critical Systems is the Number 1 Cybersecurity Risk to Utilities

The utilities industry is rapidly modernizing its infrastructure, adding more digitized equipment and connectivity across devices, plants, and systems. This evolution to “smart infrastructure” represents a positive, paradigm shift for the industry. Unfortunately, the security policies of many utilities have not evolved along with it, leaving them incredibly vulnerable. In its new whitepaper, The 6 Biggest Cybersecurity Risks Facing the Utilities Industry, ABI Research highlights the most prevalent security weaknesses in the Utilities Industry and offers best practices to utility companies looking to steer clear of cybercriminals and threats.

As these threats continue to mount, it’s imperative for companies within the utility space to deploy secure IT/OT solutions. In the whitepaper, considerations and recommendations for shoring up IoT architecture and integrated security capabilities are offered as well.

Sonos Has Put Itself in the Middle of the Battle Between Alexa and Google Assistant

CNN

When it comes to smart speakers, most consumers face a choice: Am I an Alexa or a Google Assistant type of person? High-end speaker maker Sonos is making that decision easier by giving users access to both options.

"Sonos' goal is to provide music and speaker systems to the widest audience they can," said Jonathan Collins, research director at ABI Research who follows the smart home industry. "If the company went down their own route with a voice assistant, it'd be head-to-head competing against players like Amazon and Google in that smart speaker market, which isn't where Sonos wants to be or where its strength is." What is Wi-Fi 6 and Why You're Going to Want It

ZDNet

Wi-Fi 6, also known as 802.11ax, is like its predecessors, faster than the standards, which came before it. How much faster? It depends.

As ABI Research Senior Analyst Andrew Zignani noted "Wi-Fi 6 pre-standard chipsets are readily available from numerous vendors including Broadcom, Qualcomm, Marvell, Quantenna, Intel, and Celenom," but they are "pre-standard." The Wi-Fi 6 standard hasn't been nailed down yet. It will be completed later this year. Read the full article
