Smart Cities in Southeast Asia: Resilience, Sustainability, Mobility, Safety, and Economic Development

Cities across Southeast Asian countries face a diverse set of challenges. These range from putting in place basic infrastructure to fuel the local economy in some of the poorest countries like Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia to making sure that the economy is not coming to a halt in the more developed and/or fast-growing economies like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia, which are facing increasing levels of congestion, pollution, and pressures from tourism, prompting sustainability efforts ranging from vehicle electrification and car sharing to eco-tourism and renewable energy generation. As an extreme measure to counter urbanization problems, the Philippines has embarked on building two cities from scratch, New Manila Bay and New Clarke City, deploying state-of-the-art livability and sustainability paradigms for the city of the future.

The 6 Biggest Cybersecurity Risks Facing the Utilities Industry

The utilities industry is rapidly modernizing its infrastructure, adding more digitized equipment and connectivity across devices, plants, and systems.

This evolution to “smart infrastructure” represents a positive, paradigm shift for the industry. Unfortunately, the security policies of many utilities have not evolved along with it, leaving them incredibly vulnerable.

In this whitepaper, we’ll explore the evolving technological ecosystem, the mounting risks, and best practices for utility companies looking to steer clear of cybercriminals and threats.

RF Power Semiconductors Pass US$1.5 Billion for 2018 with GaN Driving the Market Upward

Spending on RF power semiconductors (for <4GHz and >3W) continued to grow in 2018, surpassing the US$1.5 billion mark, found ABI Research.  The wireless infrastructure segment has also turned around and all segments are up. Gallium Nitride (GaN) – long seen as the likely promising new “material of choice” for RF power semiconductors – is continuing its march to capture share.

“Gallium Nitride has gained market share in 2018 and is forecasted to be a significant force over the next few years,” noted ABI Research Director Lance Wilson. “It bridges the gap between two older technologies, exhibiting the high-frequency performance of Gallium Arsenide combined with the power handling capabilities of Silicon LDMOS. GaN is now a mainstream technology which has achieved more than measurable market share and, in the future, will capture more than a quarter of the market. Read more

Cross Channel Ad Management and Tracking to Help Drive Video Ad Tech Market Toward US$6 Billion in Revenue by 2023

Despite ongoing consolidation in the ad tech market, overall growth continues as digital advertising spends increase and companies better utilize collected data. Updated standards such a VAST 4.1 and new initiatives are adding cohesion and interoperability, but adoption is expected to be relatively gradual. In total, the video ad tech space will reach close to US$6 billion by 2023, up from just under US$1.7 billion in 2018, according to ABI Research.

“Mobile video often garners a significant amount of attention, particularly attention devoted to 5G but connected TV viewing is growing at a faster rate and could reach parity in the coming years. Advertising, though, remains relatively siloed and as more ad spend moves to digital, the value in cross channel management and tracking will grow in kind — particularly when it includes traditional TV services, which remain the primary source of video viewing for a large number of households,” commented Michael Inouye, Principal Analyst at ABI Research. Smarter, More Sustainable Buildings

The Globe and Mail

According to a report by ABI Research, the positive impact of smart city technologies could see cities locking in incremental economic growth of over five per cent per year, and drive more than $20-trillion in additional economic benefits over the coming decade.

Since an estimated two-thirds-plus of the world population will reside in the top 100 cities of the world by 2050, these megacities present a tremendous opportunity for technology fuelled transformation. Read the full article

Why Popular Map Apps Still Struggle 'Neath the Streets of Boston

NPR Radio

There is an issue in the heart of Boston, where, thanks to a little $24 billion project back in the '90s, two major highways and crucial exits — not to mention the pathways to and from the airport — all exist underground, where GPS signals can’t reach . . . and yet neither Google nor Apple has added this functionality to their popular mapping platforms. This is particularly mystifying in the case of Google, which actually owns Waze.

"Technologically, indeed, this is a no-brainer," said Henrique Rocha, an analyst with ABI research. He said it would be fairly cheap and easy to for Apple or Google to incorporate this functionality. But in the case of Google, he suspects the reticence is precisely because it owns Waze. Read the full article
