Summary

This report examines the microwave and millimeter wave high-power vacuum electron device market and the extent to which emerging gallium nitride (GaN) devices may affect that business now and in the future. Microwave and millimeter wave VEDs have been in existence since World War II but this marketplace has been overlooked to a great extent in favor of more fashionable technologies. Nevertheless, without these devices many defense systems, space communications, energy research, medical electronics systems, and even the lowly microwave oven wouldn’t exist. The basic technology for these VEDs is based on the vacuum tube that was invented at the turn of the 20th century but this critical market is much larger than one would think and for the first time high performance GaN semiconductor devices are poised to grab a piece of it.
