An Analysis of LTE Standards Body Contributions

As the LTE market ramps up and as intellectual property lawsuits increase, LTE intellectual property has become a critical issue for companies over the last several years. After learning from the past with GSM and WCDMA/UMTS, many companies have sought an improved experience with LTE patents. Within the 3GPP, the process of developing the LTE standard is closely tied with the creation of LTE patents and the strengthening of companies’ patent portfolios. This enables them to better position their intellectual property within standards and gives them an improved bargaining position when cross-licensing patents with other companies, which is done confidentially. This research report illustrates the relevant positions of the most significant companies in terms of their intellectual property contributions in the RAN portion of the 3GPP LTE standard. Approved contributions to the standard ensure that the intellectual property used in the standard is likely to be considered essential, since the associated patents are required for adherence to the LTE standard.
