An article published last month in The New York Times talks about the skepticism federal government agencies have for cloud services, especially in the wake of security threats reported by vendors and agencies. In 2008, prompted in part by the economy, Vivek Kundra, the U.S. Chief Information Officer, announced that the government intends to build an optimized, cost-effective, government-wide infrastructure that supports agency mission while providing reliability and security in service delivery. By pushing the Cloud First mandate, wherein federal agencies were encouraged to choose existing cloud solutions for their proposed IT deployment, the government hoped to achieve cost efficiencies by consolidating their IT infrastructure.
