Survey
This product is part of the first installment of ABI Research’s Technology Barometer which surveys respondents biannually in seven countries: US, China, India, South Korea, France, Germany, and the UK. In this report 2000 US consumers between the ages of 14 and 64 were surveyed online about the consumer electronic products in their household (device type, number of devices, and brands), home networking, and connected devices. In addition, those consumers with connected devices were asked about their usage habits (e.g. applications used), including time spent watching online video.
Among the devices HDTVs, Blu-ray players, and game consoles, continue to show solid growth opportunities, with others such as MP3 players/PMPs and DVD players facing strong competition from new technologies and substitutive devices (e.g. mobile phones). Connectivity in the digital home is also progressing along with the growing number of connected CE devices, although there remains some fragmentation and need for additional education. Among the connected services, Netflix’s early presence in the streaming video market and strategy to reach a wide array of devices is paying dividends as it was most used service when viewing online video on connected CE devices. New technologies (such as 3D), and devices (e.g. media tablets and Internet adapter boxes) are starting to gain mindshare and could make significant contributions to the development and evolution of the digital home; although price, consumer education, content, and features/technology remain key market levers if these new opportunities are to bear fruit.
