Consumer Device Ownership & Purchase Intent

Summary

This product is part of the first installment of ABI Research’s Technology Barometer, which surveys respondents biannually in seven countries: US, China, India, South Korea, France, Germany, and the UK. In this report, 2024 US consumers between the ages of 14 and 64 were surveyed online about the consumer electronic products in their household (device type and number of devices), home networking, and purchase intent (device type, brand, and features critical to the purchase decision). Respondents were also queried about the computing devices in the home (as well as purchase intent), 3D, and universal remotes. Amongst the US sample, HDTVs, Blu-ray players, and video game consoles were among the most cited consumer devices for intended purchases within the next six months, although the largest segment (46%) of respondents was not considering any CE purchases. Price was among the most critical factors when evaluating CE purchase decisions, suggesting continued heightened price sensitivity amongst consumers. While 3D remains a hot topic, consumers still appear to view this technology with some hesitation, citing a lack of interest in 3D content (possibly due to limited availability), high price, aversion to 3D glasses, and lack of consumer education.
