2010 was a remarkable year for China’s handset market, with unit shipments increasing 17% compared to 2009. The country successfully achieved the first phase of its 3G technology deployment, completing 3G network construction in most major provinces and cities. Chinese handset operators began distributing 3G handsets through collaborations with domestic and international handset OEMs, with the transition to 3G leading a shift toward a more handset operator-centric distribution model. Smartphones also performed notably during 2010, composing approximately 11% of the country’s total handset shipments. China’s handset OEMs benefitted from the high sales volume of affordable smartphones, which have become the preferred choice of Chinese consumers due largely to their local user interface.
