Portable Media Player Market Update
Does the Recent Decline in Apple iPod Shipments Portend Things to Come?
Research Report
The portable audio/media player market faces challenges as other devices and services such as mobile phones and Internet radio continue to impact the competitive landscape. While the overlap between portable AV devices and mobile phones is not as complete as, for example, that between PDAs and smart phones, these devices have affected the potential of the portable AV device market, and will likely continue to do so.
ABI Research therefore forecasts an 11% CAGR for portable media players (PMPs) from 2009 to 2015, but a -4.4% CAGR for the wider group of all portable AV players, burdened as it is by audio players that are facing competitive threats from several devices such as PMPs, mobile phones, and media tablets. In addition the increased value in connectivity is favoring more robust devices. Audio-only devices, however, still fulfill a market need, offering value to younger individuals, those using them for exercise, and those who desire long battery/playback life.
