Why Hasn’t The Economic Downturn Affected Broadband Growth?
Recently, the US House of Representatives approved a budget of $7.2 billion to deploy next-generation broadband to every community in America as part of the economic stimulus package. The Korea Communications Commission plans to improve broadband speeds in Korea to 1 Gbps by the end of 2012 with an approximate budget of $24.6 billion. Germany, the third-largest broadband market by revenue in 2008, plans to supply broadband Internet access to all households – even in remote areas – and increase speeds to 100 Mbps by the end of 2018. The question is: Why does broadband infrastructure play such an important role in the economy and why do we need higher speeds?
