One of the first major MEMS successes was inertial sensors in airbag systems, which revolutionized this market providing a small scale, low cost and reliable alternative to traditional sensor systems. Since then MEMS sensors have permeated a wide range of automotive systems including ESP and TPMS. The market is large and growing, driven largely by regional mandates that compel OEMs to include safety systems in vehicles. As these mandates come into force, a market is created across all vehicle types that might have only existed in the high end of the market without such mandates. This study covers MEMS sensors - accelerometers, gyroscopes and pressure sensors used in automotive airbag, ESP and tire pressure monitoring systems.
