Facebook Places Propels Location-based Social Networking into the Mainstream
In August 2010, Facebook launched a long awaited location feature, allowing users to share their current location with friends. Facebook Places was initially introduced in the US, followed by Japan and the UK with other regions expected to follow soon. It is currently only available on a new 3.2 version of the Facebook iPhone application and on Facebookâs mobile site touch.facebook.com on selected devices supporting W3 geolocation. Blackberry and Android clients are expected in the near future. Facebook plan to offer developers full access to location information through a set of APIs. It is currently working with Yelp, Foursquare, Gowalla, and Booyah on the integration of Places check-ins.
