Intel Acquires TI’s DOCSIS Modem Group

Intel has announced it will acquire Texas Instruments’ (TI) Puma group which makes the DOCSIS chipsets used in cable modems and gateways. Like the Pace-2wire acquisition, Intel’s move highlights a desire to integrate broadband modems or gateways into set-top boxes. This pressure is driven by two different trends. Set-top boxes are migrating from using a low data-rate out-of-band (OOB) communication with the network to high-speed connections. The OOB connections can only be used for “bookkeeping” functions – ordering a Pay-Per-View movie, for example. However, high speed connections will also enable more Internet TV programming.
