GTL’s Tower Infrastructure Consolidation and the Impact of 3G/4G Spectrum Auctions (and Vice Versa)
- Published 30 Jul 2010
Until its recent M&A with Reliance Infratel, GTL Infrastructure was a small player in the tower market. Now, it is the second largest tower operator in the world, with 80,000 towers in India. After one of the largest M&As in India and in the telecom space, the consolidated company is valued at $10.83 billion, and in terms of number of towers it is second only to Indus Towers, another Indian tower operator, jointly owned by mobile operators Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Essar, and Idea Cellular, Ltd. and reported to have more than 100,000 towers. How is this M&A activity related to the 3G/4G auctions? And what does it presage for the tower industry in India?
