Everything Is Connected...(Someday)
In Vernor Vinge’s 2006 sci-fi novel “Rainbows End” everything in the world of 2025 is connected – networked sensors permeate the natural environment, our buildings, our machines, even our clothes and personal items. People interact through advanced user-interface technology with the world in the context of incredible information richness. In the real world of 2010, a variety of underlying technology trends are unfolding towards a future remarkably similar to Vinge’s fictionalized account. One such trend is the growing use of Internet Protocol (IP) in sensor networking applications. In this ABI Insight, we’ll analyze the implications of the recent announcement by the ZigBee Alliance and the Wi-Fi Alliance about the use of the ZigBee Smart Energy 2.0 public application protocol with both ZigBee and Wi-Fi data link and physical layers.
