Large Cellular Modem Vendors Entering the WiMAX Space is a Milestone
- Published 08 Mar 2010 by Philip Solis
Delays in the WiMAX ecosystem and some of the uncertainties and overhyped bad press around WiMAX have caused many of the larger cellular modem vendors to be wary about creating WiMAX products in the past, and rightfully so. Only in the last year has population coverage picked up significantly in key markets such as the United States, so smaller players have made USB modems to pick up the slack: C-motech, Franklin Wireless, Motorola, and ZTE. But Sierra Wireless and Novatel Wireless’s entry into the WiMAX modem space is a milestone because these two companies are major players in this space. Why have they chose the portable WiMAX gateway form factors? What can we expect from the other large cellular modem vendors?
