The iPad: Does Apple Know Something About AT&T's Wireless Infrastructure Network That We Don’t?
Apple’s explosive iPad announcement has started a firestorm of discussion and speculation. Adding gasoline to the fire, the 3G version of the iPad will use AT&T Wireless’s network for some innovative no contract data plans, namely 250 MB for $14.95 per month and an unlimited plan for $29.95 monthly. This has many industry watchers reeling. That section of Steve Job’s presentation raised more questions than Apple’s press conference answered. AT&T has come in for a great deal of criticism lately because of service difficulties in some major urban areas and the ubiquitous “map” ads run by a smirking Verizon. These two events would make one wonder exactly what Apple was thinking by tying an allegedly weakened AT&T to such an important product announcement. A little careful thinking, though, does point out several things that most of the industry and its pundits may be overlooking.
